FILED AWAY!

Democrats are attempting to pour fuel on MAGA’s Epstein files dumpster fire. It hardly needs their help.

  • President Donald Trump has survived so many insane scandals — from impeachments to a criminal conviction over sending hush money to a porn star — that it’s easy to think he’s untouchable. But there are signs that the political crisis now engulfing his White House may be different. That’s because, for once, it’s not angsty Democrats who are furious at him — it’s his own base. Even MAGA stalwarts like Steve Bannon and Alex Jones are up in arms.
  • Attorney General Pam Bondi ignited a civil war in Trump’s Department of Justice after she promised, and then publicly failed, to release new info about Epstein, the child sex predator who killed himself in prison six years ago. The flip-flop enraged Trump’s supporters, who have feasted on a steady diet of Epstein conspiracy theories for years. “Never before has Trump faced public criticism from people who have real influence with his base,” noted Crooked’s own Dan Pfeiffer. “This is a completely new dynamic that could sow distrust among his previously loyal supporters.”
  • Democrats are trying to make the most of it. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) plan on introducing legislation that would force the Trump administration to release more Epstein files. Republicans have the votes to block this symbolic effort — but will then have to answer to their own voters about why they did. Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee has set up a bot to run the X account “Has Trump released the Epstein files?” Every day, the account simply posts: “No.”
  • You know an issue is catching fire when even Elmo starts dunking on Trump about it. The beloved Sesame Street puppet’s X account was hacked last night, and posted, among other things: “RELEASE THE FILES @realDonaldTrump CHILD F*****.” I would expect this from maybe Oscar the Grouch… Settle down Elmo!

The MAGAworld meltdown keeps growing more intense. Trump has only himself to blame.

  • Trump’s attempts to change the subject have proved futile. “We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening … and ‘selfish people are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies,” Trump ranted on Truth Social over the weekend. He doesn’t want people to “waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about.”
  • Many in Trump’s base seem to have just figured out that he was close friends with Epstein for years — a fact that raises nagging questions about whether Trump might be attempting a coverup to protect himself. Elon Musk, Trump’s former “first buddy,” has publicly insisted that Trump is hiding the Epstein files because he’s in them.
  • To take the temperature of Trump’s base on this issue, just check out the simmering outrage on Truth Social — a far-right cesspool that’s home to the staunchest Trump loyalists on the internet. “This is going to cost you so many supporters. I being one of them. I have been to multiple rallies and even was there on J6,” one user replied to Trump. “It appears you or a loved one was in on it and you want this to go away.”
  • Bannon and far-right dingbat Laura Loomer are both calling for Trump to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Epstein files and release more documents. Right-wing commentator Megyn Kelly retweeted a post calling for Bondi to be fired and “EVERYTHING” to be released.

Trump seems shocked that, for once, his own supporters are insisting that he keep his word on something. As The Atlantic’s Jonathan Chait wrote, he must’ve “assumed that his promises to release Epstein’s records would go the same way all his other promises had: straight into the memory hole.”

"Toughen up.” — Former President Barack Obama's advice to Democrats for taking on Donald Trump.

NEWS NEWS NEWS

The Supreme Court cleared the way for Donald Trump to fire 1,400 Education Department employees. Now, Education Secretary Linda McMahon can continue to dismantle the department, probably by smacking it repeatedly with a steel folding chair, WWE-style.
Florida is trying to hide the list of inmates at “Alligator Alcatraz,” the cartoonishly-cruel and isolated migrant detention facility deep in the Everglades. But the Miami Herald put together a searchable database of more than 700 people who were sent there or could be soon. This is exactly why independent journalism is so important in the Trump era.
The Department of Defense will begin using Grok, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot that lost its mind and started spouting such offensive language that I wouldn’t even print it in this goofy newsletter. So now the Pentagon is teeming up with the bot that renamed itself “MechaHitler”? Great idea. Let’s give it the nuclear codes, and hope for the best?
Trump threatened to place heavy sanctions on Moscow and send more weapons to Ukraine if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin doesn’t agree to a peace deal within 50 days. “I felt we had a deal about four times,” Trump told reports today. “But it just kept going on and on.” At least he’s catching on that he’s been totally played.
Former President Joe Biden pushed back on Trump’s accusations that he wasn’t in his right mind when he used an autopen to sign off on sweeping pardons. “I made every decision,” Biden told the New York Times, explaining that he employed the autopen to replicate his signature because “we’re talking about a whole lot of people.”
Former President Barack Obama urged Democratic lawmakers to fight harder against Trump’s excesses. “I think it’s going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions. And it’s going to require Democrats to just toughen up,” Obama said at a private fundraiser. Mark Cuban had similar thoughts Pod Save America yesterday, give it a listen!
The CIA lied for decades about having no knowledge of Lee Harvey Oswald before he assassinated former President John F. Kennedy, newly unearthed records prove. A CIA-backed group that advocated against Cuban leader Fidel Castro even knew about Oswald and interacted with him, the documents show. What a day to be a conspiracy theorist!
Bitcoin hit record highs this morning, trading at more than double its value last year. It’s a good week to be a crypto bro, as House Republicans prepare to consider several industry-friendly bills — in a legislative romp they’re dubbing “crypto week.” Get ready for the most insufferable people you know to become even more insufferable… and rich.
