The Democratic National Committee is launching a new attack on Donald Trump for tonight’s debate that singles out the weirdest guy in his spin-room entourage: RFK Jr. What A Day got an exclusive sneak peek.
  • Many observers predicted that failed independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s endorsement of disgraced former President Trump two weeks ago would yield fresh material for Democratic attack ads, thanks to the Kennedy family scion’s long history of bizarre public statements and baffling enthusiasm for dead animals. And those predictions weren’t wrong! Dems are seizing the opportunity this evening, when the roadkill enthusiast will be on hand for Trump after his debate against Vice President Kamala Harris.
  • The DNC’s new ad points out RFK Jr. has thrown plenty of shade at the guy he’s now going to try to support in the spin room after the debate. “I think President Trump’s administration has been catastrophic for this country,” RFK Jr. says in a video the DNC plans to release tonight, splicing together nine different instances of him hammering the convicted felon. “He doesn’t deserve another chance.”
  • RFK Jr. may need his own hype-man to explain all that away. The anti-vaxxer’s ascension into the upper echelons of Trump’s inner circle has set alarm bells ringing in the public health community over fears that Trump might give RFK Jr. a top role in a future administration, such as health and human services secretary (a terrifying prospect, for reasons we detailed last week.) “Normal candidates would run from a surrogate who has pushed 9/11 conspiracy theories, advocated disinformation that led to a deadly measles outbreak, and had a worm eat part of his brain,” DNC spokesperson Matt Corridoni said in a statement.
To mess with Trump’s orange head, Harris is bringing his own former allies to support her.
  • Former Trump White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci and former Trump national security official Olivia Troye will be Harris’ guests tonight, underscoring her attempt to show that even people in MAGA world think their old boss is nuts. Harris has lots of material to work with: His former top aides say he’s a threat to democracy, and even former Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the most ultra-hardcore Republicans in recent American history, would rather vote for Harris than Trump. You know the dude really shouldn’t be president when Cheney is on the same side as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
  • The stakes are high for tonight’s debate — considering the last one literally ended the campaign of President Joe Biden. “I’m actually not nervous,” one current senior administration official told What A Day. “I think the vice president was made for this moment and is ready. She is a prosecutor, speaks clearly and convincingly, and knows how to make a point. None of that can be said about Donald Trump,” said the official, who previously worked for the DNC.
President Biden’s last debate against Trump proved just how much debates matter — and that no one can make assumptions about how either candidate will perform, even if one is a deranged sexual abuser who said he wants to be a “dictator.”

Ukraine is re-upping its call for permission to fire U.S.-provided weapons deeper into Russian territory — this time, by citing U.S. claims that Iran is giving Russia ballistic weapons. “Ukraine calls on its partners to put pressure on Iran, as well as to finally remove restrictions on the use of long-range weapons — at least to maintain parity,” states an internal Ukrainian government document setting out talking points for officials, obtained by What A Day. The Biden administration has mostly resisted, for fear of escalation.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the killing of a Turkish-American activist in the Israeli-occupied West Bank was “unprovoked and unjustified,” adding that Israel’s security forces “need to make some fundamental changes in the way that they operate in the West Bank.” Israel said the woman, who was attending an anti-settlement protest, was likely unintentionally shot by its troops — a line we’ve heard before from Israel. Meanwhile in Gaza, an Israeli strike blasted a crater in a designated safe zone on Tuesday, killing scores of Palestinians.
Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), Trump’s veep nominee, doubled down on his evidence-free, racist claim about Haitian migrants eating pets in Ohio, claiming his office received “many inquiries” about it, and urging people to keep posting cat-and-duck memes. He then admitted: “It’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false.” Gee! In that case, we should note that the What A Day office has received many inquiries about the status of the couches in Senator Vance’s campaign headquarters. Those rumors may turn out to be false. Regardless, we encourage readers to continue posting couch memes. See how this works, senator?
The White House slammed Vance for spreading hateful nonsense about Haitians, and warned it could cause anti-immigrant violence: “This kind of disinformation is dangerous because there will be people that believe it no matter how ludicrous and stupid it is,” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said on Tuesday. “And they might act on that kind of information and act on it in a way where somebody could get hurt. So, it needs to stop.”
Paul Dans, the former director of the notorious right-wing Project 2025, criticized Trump’s campaign for a series of missteps and overconfidence, which he says could cost MAGA world the election. He suggested Trump replace senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles. Why stop there? Trump should replace himself too!
North Carolina’s Supreme Court ruled late Monday that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s name must be removed from the state ballots. That’s a big win for the former presidential candidate, who failed to get his name removed from Michigan’s ballots in an attempt to bolster Trump in the battleground state.
Autumn temperatures are rising around the country, rising 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit on average from 1970 to 2023, a new analysis found. That means more air conditioning in the fall, a longer wildfire season, and big changes for farmers. A new way to fight climate change and save the best season of the year: Mobilize all pumpkin spice lovers. We can’t afford to lose that vital part of American culture.
